Yo La Tengo is one of those bands that would have been millionaire if they gained a dollar for each positive critic. I don’t mean to say this band is poor, but for sure it has never received that massive success it would deserve. Despite of the Spanish name, the band comes from New Jersey, and the name originates from a baseball anectode (“What the hell is a Yellow Tango??” is simply fantastic). Yo La Tengo started in mid 80s, and it belongs to the main American Indie Rock scene; it merges its sound also with Pop and Shoegaze, reaching an extremely original result, easily recognazible ny only few chords. The venue Volksbühne is a nice old teather with really good acousticS, which helped to fully appreciate Yo La Tengo’s sound. The band is now touring for the new album “Fade”, released at the beginning of 2013. They played a first acoustic set, about 45 min long, favouring the slow and intimist songs, picking them out of different albums. After a 30 min break the band came back on stage offering a second set, more Rock-Noise oriented: only those present can understand what the audience received! Really impressive, it surprised me how they could perform live. Yo La Tengo gave us two encores as a present before leaving the stage once and for all. Just a quote I found on the Internet to describe better what Yo La Tengo is: “Yo La Tengo is always friendly. This is not the forbidding experimentation of an aspiring vanguard. This is the fooling around of folks who like to go out on Saturday night and make some noise—and then go home humming it.”
