Eels

Mr. White Rabbit (?) (6/10)
Start 19:50 / End 20:10
It’s hard to define his show: he arrived unexpected on stage, walking undisturbed among the audience, dressed in a big white costume. He stayed on stage for about 5 min without moving, then started singing few covers in a theatrical way. All this was accompanied by a masked girl dancing next to him, and throwing some objects towards the audience. At the end he left the stage again walking among the audience, directed to the exit. I can’t say which was the meaning of all this, but there was probably something ironic hidden behind, and it was nice and surrealistic to experience.

Nicole Atkins (5/10)
Start 20:15 / End 20:45
Nicole Atkins played a melodic Folk Rock alone with her guitar; she hardly impressed anyone. Nice voice, enjoyable lyrics, but really nothing fresh. Hard to grasp the reason of choosing her as support for Eels.

Eels (8/10)
Start 21:00 / End 22:35
The long line in front of the circus tent-shaped building that is the Tempodrom at 18:30 already hinted that we were going to attend something relevant. Eels is surely something that deserves this kind of attention, because its Lo-fi Alternative Rock with Funk shades is really original in the Rock scene. Eels is one of the few bands who just plays and releases what it wants, showing a big middle finger to the mainstream music. Eels presented its latest work “Wonderful, Glorious”, along with many other songs from its discography. The setlist wasn’t full of hits, but Eels rediscovered live some hidden minor jewels. The scenography was almost absent, with the exception of some annoying rotating led lights put on the floor, and a big widescreen, on which coloured lights and geometrical shapes were projected. This way, the attention was all centered on Mark and his great band, which offered an amazing and amusing show. Mark is a great musician, full of ideas, and he knows well how to entertain the audience. A Eels’s concert is something to attend and we’ll be there next time he’ll play in town. We can’t miss it, we are all his “Schatzy”!
