The Notwist (8/10)
Start 21:05 / End 23:15
German Indie-Rock band The Notwist played at the Berliner Festspiele as part of the “Foreign Affairs“, together with other relevant musicians as Apparat, Anika, and Emika. The theatre was a great location for the sold-out concert of the band, active already since the beginning of the 90s. Inside the theatre, wood was the frame of a picture seeing rows of chairs located close to the wide and high stage; everything resulted in a cozy and intimate atmosphere, with the pleasure of a comfortable place to seat after a long day of work, listening to some good music. The band got on the stage punctually: without support band, the concert started with some light and smoky fog permeating the darkly illuminated theatre. No scenic design on stage, but emphasizing games of lights along the performance, often with the band members in shadow effect, with light coming from behind leaving only the singer in light. The Notwist proposed in more than two hours a lot of its repertoire, and some stuff from the upcoming album due in some weeks. The live version of its mix of Indie-Rock and Electronic music was even better than the studio material: the electronic aspect, although always present in the songs, never overcame the main role covered by the rock component, which featured great guitar and drum work (with the drummer occasionally giving the impression of being a member of a grindcore band!). Nevertheless there was also a brass trio, who accompanied the band in some songs, who perfectly matched the tunes with the electronic bases, creating an impressive and engaging sound. The post-rock component was growingly strong in the Notwist´s sound, leading to some psychedelic tale in some tracks, which made the audience jump from the chair and rocking following the groove. The Notwist was in great shape, and probably some of the audience was previously unaware of being about to witness such as show. The Notwist is without doubt one of those bands which are better live than on album, and surely nobody of yesterday’s attendees regretted having bought the ticket. A great surprise for someone, a nice confirmation for many.
