True Widow (8/10)
Start 21:00 / End 21:40
True Widow is one of the hidden jewels among the large number of extreme bands signed to Relapse Records. The American trio released this year the new work “Circumambulation”, which received a large consensus by critics. In its own way, True Widow represents something extreme in the scene: its original and surprising mix of Stoner Rock and Shoegaze, named by the band “Stonegaze”, is heavy and slow, warm and gloomy, and it’s hard to find a good comparison within other bands. Try to imagine a person walking through a desert during a hot sunny day, tired and thirsty, constantly looking at his feet while proceeding little step by little step, not caring about anything around. The three members built up an intense sound during the show, where the bass of Nicole Estill created hypnotic and repetitive patterns and funeral marches, able to involve the attendees, who gave the band a positive response, even though its sound would not be so close to the one a Kurt Vile’s fan might expect at his shows. A sound which resulted even more powerful live than on album, and which can be soon experienced again live, since True Widow has already announced a new date in April here in Berlin.

Kurt Vile & The Violators (8/10)
Start 22:15 / End 23:40
Kurt Vile and Berlin have with no doubt a special relation, thus the artist hasn’t miss a chance to come and play in the city. The gig, organized by Puschen, saw Kurt Vile present the fruits of his prolific year: the new album “Waking on a Pretty Daze” and even the EP released in September “It’s a big World Out There (And I Am Scared)”. Accompanied by his band The Violators, Vile is one of the latest representatives of American Roots Rock: learned and metabolized the lessons of masters such as Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen, he added Psychedelic nuances and rearranged everything with a Lo-fi attitude. With a base as support on some tracks, Kurt Vile & The Violators offered a great performance to the attendees, who had completely filled the venue Lido. The songs were taken from different albums of the band, and they created a cohesive sound flow, with the amazing riffs and solos played by Kurt and the excellent multi-instrumentalist Jesse Trbovich. Rock-oriented songs with a psychedelic conclusion where all the members played with full power, were alternated to more intimate pieces; at one point Vile played alone on stage with his acoustic guitar and a soft light embracing him. The concert ended after an encore, but the peak of the show was achieved directly before that, when the whole band played at maximum volume with Jesse at the saxophone, and all together created an apocalyptic wall of sound, which could have been the perfect conclusion for such a night. Two great bands, two great performances: hard to imagine a better Monday evening.
