Matt Elliott (8/10)
Start 21:30 / End 23:00
The red lights of the Roter Salon, together with dark New Wave music in the background, received warmly the audience coming inside the venue. This created a weird atmosphere and gave a blood touch to walls, sofas and chandeliers inside the small venue, which reminded strongly to a ballroom of the 20s. Better venue for an acoustic evening with Matt Elliott is hard to imagine. It was the 2003 when the English songwriter began to release albums under his birth name, after his experience with “The Third Eye Foundation“. The latest album “Only Myocardial Infarction Can Break Your Heart” has been released in 2013 for the label “Ici d’Ailleurs“, an album where it’s possible to see some positive lights between the sweet melancholy, with which Matt was used to delight us. Exact with the first album song “The Right To Cry”, Matt started the evening, without any opening band, after walkinh through the sitting audience to come alone with his acoustic guitar to the stage. Just the more than 17 minutes of this song were the ticket price worth: Matt simply bewitched and hypnotized the full venue with his fingers touch on the guitar and his warm voice. A wonderful song, which really shined of energy and made stronger and more evident the differences with old songs as “Dust, Flesh and Bones”, full of sorrow, melancholy, more intimate but not less beautiful and charming. The set was enriched even by some covers as “I Put A Spell On You” of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” of Nancy Sinatra and the closing song “Misirlou” of Dick Dale, made famous by Tarantino as Pulp Fiction theme. All these covers have been rearranged by Matt Elliott with his Dark Folk style, achieving interesting results. A show of one hour and an half, that seemed to catch the attention of each person in the venue. Never mind if he didn’t remember some pieces of songs, yesterday night his music and his voice could easily reach the soul and the hearth, and everyone left the venue with the awareness to have taken part to something special.
