William Tyler (7/10)
Start 21:00 / End 21:35
William Tyler is an American guitarist, who started his solo career in 2010, after having played in bands as Lambchop and Silver Jews. With a second album “Impossible Truth”, out about one year ago, William opened the show of Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, using the chance to present his critically acclaimed songs before a bigger audience. William came to the stage with a jeans jacket and his electric guitar on the shoulder, and started to amaze the audience with his Instrumental Indie Folk, played with a magical touch, able to create a dreamy country atmosphere. Between the different pieces, William entertained the people in the theater with his personal stories, which explained the song context and gave the chance to the attendees to dip more in the songs, close the eyes and let themselves be driven by his emotional Folk.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra (9/10)
Start 22:00 / End 23:50
The Canadian band Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra came finally back to play in Berlin with a brand new album “Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything”, out just the last January on Constellation records. After numerous changes in personnel and name, the band is composed now by five members and uses officially “Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra” as name.
The Volksbühne theater, with its great acoustic and not excessive size, couldn’t be better choice as venue for a band as Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra. Born in 1999 as a project for Godspeed You! Black Emperor member Efrim Menuck, the band reached a wide deserved success, thanks to its unique and experimental sound, hard to classify and able to merge several different styles together. It’s too simple to classify its music as Post-Rock: when the band began with the song “Fuck Off Get Free (For The Island Montreal)”, even opener of the latest studio album and dedicated to its loved city, everybody could taste live this impressive mix of Free Jazz, Chamber Music, Folk and Punk Rock. Featured by a particular Punk attitude, more evident in the politic influenced lyrics, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra offered a great performance playing completely the new album “Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything”, with the addition of the superb “All The Kings Are Dead” and the gently furious “Blind, Blind, Blind” in the second encore. One hour and half of almost uninterrupted music with two encores, requested with passion by the enthusiastic audience, that couldn’t have enough of the extravaganza of Efrim Menuck, of the sick sound coming from the violins of Jessica and Sophie, of the “fat” bass notes from the double-bass of Thierry Amar and of the jazz drum style of David Payant. A band composed by impressive musicians, able to create together a sound, which can change from enigmatic and complex to atmospheric and dreamy, without losing its characteristic powerful energy. A wonderful evening which will remain long in the hearth of the ones that could appreciate this impressive concert.
