Massive Attack (8/10)
Start 20:35 / End 22:05
Among its European festival appearances during this summer, Massive Attack found the time to delight the Berlin audience with a solo show in the suggestive venue Tempodrom. The answer of its fans was an obvious sold-out gig since many weeks and Massive Attack repaid this love with an impressive performance. Without any opening band, Massive Attack started the show with “Battlebox”, where the beauty and sensuality of Martina Topley-Bird was presented to the audience. After “United Snakes”, with a more aggressive noisy sound and corporations names running rapidly on the widescreen, the band proposed “Risingsong” and Robert “3D” Del Naja and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall came out to their back stage position, to go in front of it for the joy of the attendees. Massive Attack offered a setlist based mainly on songs from the albums “Heligoland”, “100th Window” and the best-sellers “Mezzanine”, with only few songs taken from the first seminal records. After almost thirty years of activity, Massive Attack have developed a trademark sound, able to fuse Hip Hop rhythms, Soul melodies, Reggae style, dark and sensual grooves and hypnotic Dub sounds. This variegated music styles were accompanied even by different voices: together with 3D and Daddy G and the celestial voice of Martina, even Horace Andy featured in many pieces, delighting the audience with a perfect sound match of Reggae and Electronic, as in the song “Angel”. The underground Dub hymn “Inertial Creeps” closed the show with the audience on fire, that, even if packed under tropical temperature, danced and sang for the whole show long. Massive Attack were forced to come out for the encore, satisfying the continuous fan screams and to offer other three pieces, where “Unfinished Sympathy” was the highest peak with “D”, “G” and Horace singing together in the front of the stage. A show that confirmed that Massive Attack is still the undisputed king of this music genre, for those who have had doubts about it.
