David Lemaitre (6/10)
Start 20:50 / End 21:30
After surprising for the unexpected long queue outside the venue at 20:45, the evening started in a bad mood since I noticed my Spot at Festsaal (one of the best concert venue in Berlin for music choice and structure) has been already occupied! 10 min before the announced 21 o’clock the support band started: a trio with the singer from Bolivia playing a melodic rock with some south american influences. The reference is Jeff Buckley with his high-pitched voice and falsetto, even if the model is long far away. Not that bad but they didn’t realize to warm me up from the snowing weather. Nice to see the strange keyboard equipped with enlightening “wine bottles” and plastic sounding paper!
Wallis Bird (7/10)
Start 21:55 / End 23:35
The little irish elf and her band are pure energy: with their Folk Rock exchange continuously an energy flux from the stage to the public and vice versa. Wallis speaks to her audience, tells dirty jokes, guides him to sing along with her: she enjoys herself from the first minute to the end. The public sees this and he loves Wallis, as Wallis loves him. I had doubts to go to the gig but at the end I completely changed my mind: this is music for live experience and works much better on the stage than on album, thanks to Wallis that sprinkles energy for the whole concert along. I found really interesting the Rap-Reggae break in onomatopeic german performed by the drummer and Wallis playing drums: only live you have the chance to attend this particular mini-shows! If you weren’t here tonight, stand up your ass from the sofa the next time Wallis Bird plays in town and go to see her: you won’t regret it!

Berlin / Frannz Club / SEA+AIR + Denison Witmer
Posted: January 18, 2013 by vals81 in Berlin, Frannz Club, Indie RockTags: Berlin, frannz club, german, indie, live, pop, review, rock
Denison Witmer (6/10)
Start 20:15 / End 20:50
An american guy with his acoustic guitar to open the gig at Frannz Club. Mr Witmer plays intimate songs and creates a domestic atmosphere, a music suitable to be listened near a fireplace, sitting on a sofa and drinking wine. I have to say it’s not my stuff but Denison plays his guitar in a harmonious way that can enchant you. Denison is also a funny guy, he talks to his public, tells stories and makes jokes: something I always appreciate in an artist. So I wish him a lot of success!
SEA + AIR (8/10)
Start 21:05 / End 22:20
Lights out, two shadows coming up to the stage, two matches light weakly, a blow and the concert starts while the match smoke smell spreads itself between the first lines. Nice way to start a gig indeed. They are SEA + AIR, a funny couple composed by a german guy and a greek charming girl. A really multi-instrumentalist duo: two wonderful voices playing together all the time and able to exchange all the instrument on the stage too. Both of them played guitar, drums, keyboard and cembalo. SEA + AIR’s songs are really beautiful and they are impregnated from a mediterranean flavour that give a touch of originality to their style. I think the semi-acoustic set helps this flavour to come out and take power compared to the album. SEA + AIR are a really amusing couple besides two great musicians: talking and playing with the audience (90% girls / 10% boys) is part of their show! Terrific the second part of “Do Animals Cry?”, this alone is worth the ticket price! They came out again for the encore after a long and loud public acclamation and they gave as present two new songs of the next album: one with strong mediterranean and psychedelic influence and one as a sweet minimalistic ballad: good clues to wait for another great album! The concert ended and you go back home with a smile on your face: could you ask more for 15€ ?????????
Venue: Frannz Club
Price: 15,50 € at Koka36
Setlist: SEA + AIR

Hamburg / O2 World / Muse + Deap Vally

Deap vally (6/10)
Start 19:25 / End 20:00
Nice hard Rock / Blues mix made by a girl duo composed from vocal/guitar and drums. Nothing special but the boys on the first lines enjoyed for sure the spicy view of big boobs, naked legs and cellulite. Let’s Rock baby.
Muse (7/10)
Start 20:30 / End 22:20
I’ m not that crazy fan but it’s worthwhile once to see them live. Nice light effects, inverted maya pyramid coming down and up from the ceiling, they know how to build a good futuristic scenography. The question is if this big “special effects” effort is thought to compensate some other lacks: they made their job and nothing else on stage, maybe they were a bit tired after this long tour. Lot of songs from the last album, which received a lot of criticism, different hits from the past, good mix at the end for more than 2 h music. I appreciate the try to evolve the sound in the last album even if i listen everywhere strong echos of INXS, U2, Foo fighters, Depeche mode and Queen. Sometimes you ask yourself if you are listening a cover album! Big concert means big venue that means often the shit O2 Arena: Good sound only if you stay in a 10 m radius from the stage. I also found the volume not as loud as it should be. A dream to see them in a small club with real fan as public without The “Muse plays-I have to go-even if I listened the last song 3 years ago-but going to Muse is cool” people. Nice Rock evening indeed.
